Aux Field - Square Landscapes [kotärecords - 2018]

Georgian sound artist Rezo Glonti returns as Aux Field for his sophomore release, Square Landscapes. Using deftly layered synths, rhythms, and oscillations, Aux Field constructs an expressive and deep synthscape that further unfolds itself on successive listens. When paired with the glitchy, black and white line work on the album sleeve, the listener is brought into a futuristic world.

Consisting of eight songs spread over two sides, Square Landscapes is a synth based revelry of beats, drones, and oscillations that push forward with varying approaches. On the whole, this Aux Field album plays toward a spread out, slowly ambulating soundscape that fills and grows as it moves forth. The mix between light and dark tones keeps each song from blending into the on prior, and showcases more of Rezo's skill as a producer. Blending styles and moods to combine into a cohesive whole adds a deeper element to Square Landscapes. While the breadth of the album builds a lasting atmosphere, Aux Field adds in subtle rhythms to enhance the sonic spectrum and further grow the scope of the LP. Leaning more toward the futuristic, Square Landscapes straddles a line between sci-fi soundtrack and videogame score, and that's meant as a total compliment.

Although only his second release under the Aux Field moniker, Rezo Glonti manages to find the sweet spot between electronic soundscapes and experimental dance music. An album that grows with subsequent listens, Square Landscapes comes in a limited edition of 300, so it won't be around for too long. Perfect material for an early morning unfolding, throw this one on and let your day begin.
