Teksti-TV 666 - Aidattu Tulevasuus [Svart Records - 2018]

Formed in 2013, Finland’s Teksti-TV 666 are a seven piece with a difference, they feature no less than five guitarists in their lineup. While their sound can become quite chaotic at times it is nothing like as noisy as one would expect from a band with quite so many guitars. The band have released a succession of EPs, so of which have been collected together on the album 1,2,3, however their first true full-length album Future Future is due imminently, however today we shall be reviewing their most recent EP Aidattu Tulevasuus.

The EP kicks off with the punky "Turbo-Mondeo", and instantly one becomes aware of the band’s influences, classic punk rock like The Ramones, and 1980s shoegaze like My Bloody Valentine have their fingers all over this. The riff sounds so much like The Ramones, but the sound is pure shoegaze. Rather like My Bloody Valentine performing a Ramones track. Even the vocals are quite similar to Joey Ramone, but the whole thing moves along well and the track makes for a good up tempo opener. The title track is up next. This time the opening leaves me thinking of Joy Division and early New Order. I can’t help but visualise Peter Hook bouncing about on the bass to this, however there is also an echo of the Ramones, End of the Century album, the Phil Spector produced pop punk masterpiece. I am particularly reminded of the track "Rock n Roll High School". There is also a hint of The Cure’s "Just Like Heaven" thrown in there. The whole thing works well, and the influences seem to complement one another. The final track on side one of the vinyl release is Rauhankone. This one is a slower number, vocally I am reminded of Peter Murphy of Bauhaus fame, however he appears to be singing over a musical mashup of The Stone Roses and My Bloody Valentine. The track is packed with various other punk, post-punk and shoegaze influences; however, the final minute and a half descends into something quite different as we are pummelled into submission with a wall of Black Metal Shoegaze guitars. This fast and furious riffing brings the side to a close.

Side two gets underway with "Severny", opening with a brief electronic intro that sounds like it was recorded on a Casio keyboard, before we are once again in punk rock territory. The high octane riff coming on like the bastard son of The Stooges, "I Wanna Be Your Dog". Once the song settles into its groove it is more shoegaze than punk, but that riff keeps emerging throughout  the track as a reminder of the song’s sonic beginnings. The final track on the album is "Katko", a ten minute instrumental kosmische track. Imagine Neu with Peter Hook on bass, it’s all swirling guitars, and motorik beats. All done with Hooky’s trademark bass sound. This is probably my favourite track on the alum, more experimental and it gives the guitarists the chance to really stretch out. I mean there are five of them!

Overall, the EP is largely a collusion of influences from the punk, post-punk and alternative rock scenes. They do a great job, the songs are well crafted and the performances are good, my only real criticism is that there isn’t quite enough of their own sound going on at times. It’s lovely to hear a young band playing with influences like Joy Division, The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, The Ramones and The Stooges, but I would just like to hear a little more of themselves in the mix, because when you do hear their own sound it’s great. Saying that, this is still a very good release, one which I shall be returning to for future listening.
