Lost Graves - Cave Burial [Void Singularity Recordings - 2018]Lost Graves in the ANW project of Rock Island, Illinois Harrison Phillis- who maybe know to fans of the USA wall- scene for his industrial influenced HNW project We Also Let Blood. Cave Burial is the projects third physical release- and it appears on UK’s Void Singularity Recordings in the form of a CDR or digital download. The CD cover features an eerier picture of a stalactite lined cave, and of course the album title it’s self-suggests moody creep-ness, so it’s a little strange the ‘wall’ we get offered up here. As to my ears it feels both rapid & almost darkly sprightly in it’s unfold. The self-titled track comes in at 78 minutes and is a blend of constantly rolling static churn, and a simplistic jittering topping- the static churn is fairly distant & muffled, while the jitter is up-front and hacking in its attack. Structure wise both elements are fairly simplistic, with the churning backing staying firm, and the hack seemingly picking up both speed & persistency as it goes along….before slowing back down again in its second half
When I first played this CDR- I thought there may be an issue with the disc, as the jittering texture seemed very close to that of a CD play glitch- but I tried playing in other players. And I finally tried the digital version, and of course, realized this is the way it’s meant to be.
On the whole, this track did little or nothing for me, and really it doesn’t come close to the atmosphere suggested by both the cover & title. And to be honest I found the whole track rather annoying, and trying…. With it’s nearing 80-minute runtime a real chore to get through. I’d found Mr. Phillis other project output a little mixed in quality, so let's hope this the case with this release & maybe Lost Graves other releases are better…as I do enjoy good ANW, so I wanted to like this…but sadly just couldn’t.
