Torture Treatment - Torture Treatment [Ominous Recordings - 2016]Torture Treatment is a Mexican based noise project that blends together a few different noise sub-genres to create a fairly original & distinctive sound. This self titled C22 tape appeared on Stockholm based Ominous Recordings, & is seemingly the projects first release. When I first got thorough the tape, in a recent review batch, I wrongly thought it was going to be run-of-the-mill Power Electronics. Due to the murky & corrupted art featuring medical gowned & deformed figures, as well as the track titles that take in names of various anti- depressant & anti-psychotics.
Sure there are certainly PE elements present here in some of the sound execution & the very buried/ noised-up vocals, which appear from time-to-time. But you also get elements morbid & dirty death industrial, bleak ‘n’ buzzing harsh noise, the odd almost HNW dwell. Plus a general feel of crude nastiness, but with intervention & change of pace/ tact in pretty much every track here.
In all the release takes in five tracks, and these each have runtime between three & five minutes a piece. At times I do wish some of the tracks/ elements stayed around a little longer, but I think that’s down to my penchant for more lengthy & repetitive dwells in certainly texturally settings. But on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed the tape, and even still after to a handfull of plays I'm still satisfied by the tracks dense twists & turns.
There is little doubt a lot of thought/ skill has gone into creating each of these tracks often dense, yet varied & shifting noise sound scapes. So if you enjoy noise that’s thick & punishing, yet shifting & sub-genre varied in its make-up this is very worth tracking down. And let’s hope this isn’t the last we’ve heard from Torture Treatment!. Roger Batty
