Z’ev - The Dossier Years [Klanggalerie - 2011]The Dossier Years brings together two releases from the mid to late 1980’s from this highly respected percussionist, industrial pioneer, and sound artist. The CD release appeared in 2011 on Austrian experimental label Klanggalerie, and offers up nearing eighty minutes worth of material. The two albums featured here are 1986’s Schönste Muziek, and 1988’s Burst This- both albums originally appeared on respected, but now sadly defunct German experimental and industrial label Dossier. The disc comes in a jewel case, and takes in a simple double sided colour inlay sleeve, which features the original cover artwork from the two releases. So first up on the disc we have Schönste Muziek, and this takes in five tracks. Each of these last between nine & four minutes, and each finds Z’ve creating moody & atmospheric percussion based compositions. If you’re familiar with Z’ev’s work then I guess you’d say these tracks are a bit more primal, stripped back, and un-manipulated. Each track takes in a set pattern of percussive elements, which he investigates over the tracks length, and these move from forceful battering onto more moody drifts, and in between the two. Burst This takes in twelve tracks, and for the most part these are shorter with running times between two & three minutes, with only one track running over the ten minute mark. Each of the tracks use roman numerals as their titles, and on the whole these tracks are a lot more layered, twisting & sonically detailed in their unfold. Also these tracks seem to have some manipulation & production added to them, and I guess you’d say they are closer to Z’ev more modern work- though they are maybe not as sonically sophisticated. As well as the more studio based less raw feel, Z’ev is also using a wider range of percussive sounds too.
On the whole this is a very worthy compilation of work from this most respected & unequal artists. With Schönste Muziek offering up a more basic & primal sound, and Burst This a more layered, processed & varied sound. Roger Batty
