Tarot - The Fool [self release - 0000]Tarot is the new project from Newcastle Upon Tyne based wall-maker L.M.( of D.S.W.A.C.V). The Fool is the first in a series of releases themed around the tarot pack, and what we have here is a C20/ digital releases that takes in two ten minute slices of junk metal based walled noise. The project is planning to put out a single release for each & every one of the 78 Rider Waite tarot cards- so if they do manage to do this we’ll be looking at one the larger themed releases from with-in the HNW scene. And if this first release is anything to go by it’s going to be a most rewarding series. I’m reviewing the tape version of this release, which came in an edition of just four copies- So I expect these are all gone, so if you are interested in this then the digital version may be your only option. Anyway the release is fairly simple, yet effective in it’s presentation with the plan white cassette tape coming in a single sided white paper sleeve- on the front this features a colour reproduction of The Fool Card from the tarot card pack, along with minimal black texts & weblinks on the spine/ back flap. So first up we have the track "I", and this ‘wall’ presents an galloping, tight, semi-ripping rapid rip like bass judder pattern. This is topped off with a subtle shifting yet damn abrasive selection of rapid rips, jitters, crisp gallops, and darting textural tears. The whole thing does have quite a playful( yet damn intense) feel to it, which of course nicely suits the theme of this particular card in the tarot pack. All in all it’s a great bit of urgent, compelling, yet creative wall- work. The second track comes in the form of "II", and this brings together a extreme tight ‘n’ taut galloping bass tone, which is rapidly & caustically splashed ‘n’ splattered by a constrict jittering ‘n’ juddering element. This ‘wall’ brings to mind watching a continual conveyer belt of junk matter getting brutal squashed & squeezed to popping. And once again it’s a very appeal bit of ‘wall-craft’ that has a brutally playful feel to it. So in summing this is a great opening release from this project- it offers up two effective & reward ‘walls’, and it has a great theme to it to. So I very much look forward to hearing more from this project. To check out this release, and the other first five head over to the projects bandcamp here. Roger Batty
