Trepaneringsritualen - Veil the World [Cold Spring - 2015]

Trepaneringsritualen, Sweden's master of dark industrial meditations, returns with a new offering on Cold Spring. Entitled Veil the World, this offering is actually not a new recording, but a CD reissue of the limited edition cassette originally released in 2011 on Kosci. The reissue is handsomely presented in a 6 panel digipak and fully remastered. I've been a huge fan of Thomas Ekelund's project since last year's massive Perfection & Permanence album, so I've been eagerly awaiting another Trepaneringsritualen (or TxRxP for short) album to fill the void. Veil the World is yet again another grim and caustic blend of occult inspired ritual industrial and power electronics, deeply blackened to the core.

The 9 track album start off with the "Cherem," which delivers a blackened cloud of gothic atmospherics, amplified metal abuse, and inhuman vocals. The album's title track "Veil the World" takes quite a different direction. Reminiscent of a Ministry track, rhythmic beats collide with machine gun guitar-like blasts and vocal stylings that even sound like a more distressed Al Jourgensen. Tracks like “Avgrunden” and “Nekyla” serve as doomy instrumental interludes made up of amplified metal musings and foreboding backdrops. “Invocation” feels like a funeral march, mixing percussive beats, electro acoustic manipulations and a sample that runs through the track’s entirety; ending with the repeated phrase “the Alpha and the Omega.”

Every Piece offers something a little different, while still retaining the overall grim mood that pervades the album. I also find Eklund’s vocal stylings, changing from inhumanly mechanical to rabid growling, to be one of many highlights of “Veil the World.”

Despite being a reissue, I find “Veil to the World” to be every bit as enthralling as the dark masterpiece Perfection & Permanence. For those wanting to acquaint themselves with modern death industrial offerings, look no further.
