Taraf De Haïdouks - Band Of Gypsies [Crammed Discs - 2001]As with this album's predecessor Dumbala Dumba, Romania's most famous gypsy ensemble Taraf De Haïdouks invited some guests to their party. This time from outside Romania: the Macedonian fanfare Koçani Orkestar, from Bulgaria clarinettist Filip Simeonov and the Turkish darbukaplayer Tarik Tuysuzoglu. Even though they didn't speak each others languages they managed to combine their respective traditions to a pan-Balkanic mixture. The music was recorded in Bucharest over three concertnights, which was special in itself because their music was denied by the government for many years: they had their own 'nice 'n' shiny' gypsies on state television. The wild and rough music of the Taraf was not wanted in the capital also because their lyrics not seldomly criticised the situation in Romania. The repertoire consists of old-style songs by the elders of the group and the more modern interpretations of the younger members. As said before, there also are Bulgarian and Macedonian tunes added, subsequently introducing odd meters to the music, that are not common in Romania. From slow ballads to breakneck speeds, the Taraf play as enthusiastically and energetic as usual and when Koçani Orkestar comes in they really blow you away!If you want to hear where Mr. Bungle based their song Ars Moriendi on or want to hear some well played, at times explosive, Balkan music (all the bandmembers are virtuoso's on their instruments), check this band out. People who like the other albums can buy this blindly, you will not be disappointed.
