The English Heretic - Tales Of The New Isis Lodge [English Heretic Recordings - 2009]The English Heretic are a mysterious musical & literary collective who investigate occult /horror matters blurring the lines between fact and fiction. The project has been active since 2003, & their sinister/atmospheric sound has moved through: dark Coil like electronics, sampled 1940’s music, darkly psychedelic tinged acoustic & electric guitar song-craft, folk, field recordings & ambience. All tipped with the projects mainly male spoken word elements. Sometimes they release book/ booklet & CDR sets, and at others they release just stand alone cdr or vinyl releases. “Tales Of The New Isis Lodge” was released back in 2009, and it saw the project offering up a ten track CDR release. Musically the tracks move from: sampled & looped ornate string & piano mixers that dart with dark electronics. Onto churning psychedelic tinged guitar & organ grooves. Through to skittering lo-fi dark beat scapes mixed with slightly jazz tinged synthetic sound tracking. Onto churning indie meets psychedelic rock cross-breeds that are tipped with uniform & sharpe beat scapes. Onto gyrating & churning mixers of 80’s horror synth texturing, swirling guitars & locked bounding beats. Onto field recordings of bird tweeters & chirps that are sampled, looped, and added darting Coil like synthetic string & beat grooves. Though to mellow & golden string samples added slow trip-hop beats and creepy dark electronics. All the tracks are darted with the odd film & ritual samples, through these are never over used. Subject wise the tracks move from: Lovecraft monsters, 1960’s psychedelic occult groups, secret & undercover London based Isis Lodge , Aleister Crowley & Sax Rohmer themed tales, Cults devoted to the vampire god of Mayan lore, and beyond. Pretty much all of the tracks feature the same spoken word English male voice that has appeared on all the projects other releases. “Tales Of The New Isis Lodge” is another enjoyable & varied ride from The English Heretic- so if you enjoy moody & mixed genre matter with a atmospheric & cinematic feel to it this is well worth a look.
