Three Legged Race - Persuasive Barrier [Spectrum Spools - 2012]

Three Legged Race is the solo project of Hair Police's Robert Beatty.  While I do enjoy the name Hair Police, I have never listened to them. Prejudice comes easy, and I always assumed they were one of the "hip" noise bands like Wolf Eyes. Luckily, I found out about Bobby B's involvement in hipness after my initial listen, and I was able to be impartial. So, with a decent band name and a terrible album title, what wonders await me?

Noise is a funny genre. It's noise, so it really doesn't have to sound good, but people know what they like and they want it to sound good. Some artists just pump out crap and don't care, because, "Hey, it's noise." Also, people of known name can generally release anything they want, and people will eat it up. That's the case, I feel, with Persuasive Barrier. The 37 minute run time is full of glitchy, blippy sounds that are random and nonsensical, but not even in a full on entropy way. They sorta follow a song pattern, and that makes them even more annoying.  While some songs evoke some nice video game vibes, they're quickly ruined by the goofy, over the top, "THESE AREN'T REAL NOTES!!" vibe coming out of this album. And if the silly sounds weren't enough to ruin a song, some come with even sillier vocals. "Magnetic Bride" starts off well enough, but the vocals destroy it. It sounds like a goofy four year old with a cheap voice changer making douchey noises while his brother plays Halo in the background. The sounds on the album made me think of Fruityloops from twelve years ago. I should know, I used to use it (and look at me now! Probably 'cause I can't grow a hipster beard or don't wear small t-shirts). There are probably eight or so minutes of decent stuff on this album.

Noise doesn't have to be random nonsense. It's still something to be consumed, so artists should construct something worth listening to. There are some nice sounds on here, but they're few and far between. This LP is recommended for those that get off when their cat walks across their keyboard.
