Tiamat - A Deeper Kind of Slumber [Century Media - 1997]

The album starts off with nice soothing keyboards, all smooth and relaxing. This sets the tone for most of it even though the first track is probably the most memorable (as in catchy) of the album because of the guitar melody (which is one of the only immediately apparent hook on the album).

"Eject us out of here"

Singer Johan Edlund has abandoned all metallic pretensions on this album and treat us to a narcoleptic journey through 13 tracks full of nice textures and unique ambience (even though it is influenced by the Pink Floyd school of "write music while you're high and mellow").

"Carry us on your shoulders, Carry us far away"

The production is extremely slick and open, maybe a little cold at times, and the songs have a tendency to take their time to develop and let the slow to mid-tempo beats hypnotize you and get you in a trance-like state. Electronic beats are used on some occasions and the results are at times trip-hop-ish and at other times more techno-ish (but nothing hardcore). A variety of instruments are used like saxophone, strings, acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards, and even, in "Four Leary Biscuits", what I believe to be a Sitar or some other similar oriental instrument with a crazy female singer vocalizing like on Dark Side of the Moon!

"I confess myself doomed, You won again"

Edlund sings in a competent clean voice, often close to a whisper. He gives the impression of someone talking softly in your ear while you are asleep; not trying to wake you up but instead to influence your dreams through suggestion. The whole thing is very surreal and trippy.

"All the sweetness you have heard has put your soul in carbon haze"

In conclusion, if you want a brutal death metal bands that makes no compromises and would rather break up than wuss out (ah!), get Pierced From Within by Suffocation, but if you want something different for late night playing, then get A Deeper Kind of Slumber by Tiamat. Of course I must point out that this is not an album that fits every mood or that you can listen to at any time of the day, but I think that everybody needs something like this for those quiet solitary moments when you're still awake late at night or maybe even to play while asleep to see what kind of dreams come out of it. Recommended to everybody who has an open mind and is not afraid to mellow out from time to time.

"As anguish wears but shades of grey"
