Ruine - Des Araignées Cherchent Mon Coeur [Self Release - 2011]“Des Araignées Cherchent Mon Coeur”(roughly translated to “Spiders Seek My Heart”) is a forty minute slice of desperate, bitter and unmoving HNW. Ruine is the new project from highly talented French HNW maker Julien Skrobek of Ghost & The Sandman Wears A Mask. The release comes in the form of a cdr in a simple white paper sleeve that features just lo-fi looking type writer like text- this just really details the projects name, the releases title, and when/where it was recorded(December 2011, Paris). This very plan bit of packaging gives one the feel that it could some long lost bureaucratic recording, & this nicely adds an air of stark mystery to the release. The single self titled track on offer here is a firm, engrossing & disciplined slice of unmoving walled noise. It finds Skrobek mixing together a stern & taut mid-tone juddering with battering yet fixed wind like billowing. Running through these two tones is a chilling filling of crisp icy static jittering. To me the ‘wall’ conjures up a mixture bitter wind whipped mountaineering climbs, and a roar ’n’ ripping vast 20 foot drill tearing deep into the earths crust. The ‘wall’ nicely locks one in a very barren, intense yet entrance state for it’s full length. So this is a deeply stark & desperate slice of walled noise, that is very unforgiving yet also rewarding & engrossing too. Pretty much like anything linked to Mr Skrobek this is worth a look….so if you dig bleak ‘n’ fixed walled noise this is really a no brainer!. Roger Batty
