Pumpkin Buzzard - Avalon Burning [Jeshimoth - 2010]

Avalon Burning is the tenth album from Pumpkin Buzzard released through Jeshimoth Entertainment.  To say it defies categorization would be vehemently true.  Industrial, pop, psychedelic, hip hop, death metal and alternative rock are combined into a quirky and chaotic creation.

What ties everything together is a texture of glitch sounds, massive beats and synth pop twisted over clean and distorted vocals.  Everything considered, for some the vocals may be the most challenging.  The sound to describe them is sort of a nasally Kurt Cobain/Beck, which may delight some and annoy others.  Oddly enough it works here.

The music also maybe too much of a collage for some tastes; if you happen to like any of the genres mentioned previously you will probably like something here.  You may find yourself hitting the forward button now and then but that’s more due to personal taste.   The songs themselves on the cd follow no pattern; whatever works for the piece is thrown in.  “Hyperdrive Hypodermic War”, “Mutant Hardware, Reptile Saddle”, “Neptune’s Suicide Master” and “Premium Nebula Mystique” are as unique as the other eleven songs found on Avalon Burning, yet these seen to rise above the others.

Are you a fan of The Melvins, KMFDM, Wu-Tang Clan, Lords of Acid, Merzbow or Napalm Death?  You’ll find all that here, any probably a lot more.  A bit of an overload, perhaps, but at least it’s different; their downfall maybe that it’s just too atypical to keep an interest.
