Lull - Like a slow river [Glacial Movement - 2008]

Going through the musical history of M.J Harris(who is behind the project 'Lull') would be an endless effort. On the wide spectrum of works he has, "Like a slow river" stands somewhere in the colder, more haunting zones.  Those who already know Glacial Movements Records and the various albums this label offers should be able to imagine what this album is about as well. Inside this white digipack album, with a real nice artwork, there are five tracks of chilling electronic sounds, vibrating constantly like distant echoes on Antarctica and ranging from desolate icy deserts to the sounds of monumental icebergs colliding with each other and shaking the foundations of the world as in the process.

In Lull's world it is not only cold, but dark as well. "Like a slow river" begins with the track "Whiteout" which is a slow, nerve breaking cruise underneath a frozen landscape. Harris makes sure to produce his dark world with great detail, slowly sliding from one environment to a wholly different one. This changing of directions happens between tracks like "whiteout", which are memorable for their cold desolation and numerous layers of sound that blow like a chilling wind on our face, to tracks like the closing part, called "Illusion of Unbroken Surface", which is a wonderful and numbing experience of drones that can melt your speakers down.

When the album ends, there is a comforting breeze of silence that soothes the mind after this demanding voyage through Harris' cold sonic river. "Like a Slow River" is a rewarding and memorable album with dark moments as well as breathtaking compositions, making the future road for Glacial Movement records seem promising indeed.
