Fredrik Klingwall - The Resilience [Last Entertainment - 2008]

Prolific Fredrik Klingwall has many projects in different musical genres- but all of his work focuses in on fantasy and horror based themes. This solo album, one of three solo albums he has released, is self described “as dark and haunting neo classical music album that composes horrific music as a soundtrack for your nightmares”.

The album itself is planned and built like a well played soundtrack, having a proper opening and distinct ending. Klingwall knows well how to manipulate music into creating dynamic changes in the atmosphere of his soundtrack, yet the attempts to make the music haunting or nightmarish are questionable. We have heard dark, somber and romantic music like this for years now, and I don't think we can consider this nightmarish anymore exactly like we can't consider most old horror movies as blood chilling. Yet as far as the music goes, dark and depressive, Klingwall is doing exceptionally well and sounds promising.

Distant atmospheric howls, dreamy piano loops and dramatic percussions are just a small glimpse from the world that Klingwall reveals on his album. Parts of 'The Resilience' seem communicate with each other, as storming, dramatic musical entrances are being answered by long and desolate soundscapes. Klingwall builds high climaxes of neo classical music and sooth them with dark ambient layers of sound, creating a complex, surprising and interesting storyline. The most memorable part of this album is the track "Distorted Dream Disorder" which, near its end, blasts into a much more energetic crescendo.

Klingwall let’s the album end with 'True Salvation', a truly heartbreaking musical move that leaves the listeners almost in tears. Everybody likes a good story and Fredrik Klingwall tells a great one to any fan of neo classical music whose looking for tragedy and drama.
