The Rita and Alo Girl - Collaboration [Urashima - 2009] | This collaboration brings together Canadian based noise project The Rita, whose one of the orignators of the HNW sound. And Italian harsh noise/HNW artist Alo Girl, whose one of the more recent innovators of the HNW form. On offer here are two sides of 12 inch vinyl which each offer up a fourteen minute long track of thick, deep and impenetrable ‘wall’ of noise. As usual with anything put out on the excellent Urashima label( which is run by Alo Girl's Cristiano Renzoni) the black on black vinyl comes in the silver ink on black card slip sleeve. And on either side of the black card slip cover is a picture of a pair of stocking glad female legs which nicely sits somewhere between being arty and more than a little sleazy. Onto the sounds inside and on the first side the ‘wall’ starts out as a thick, throbbing, low-down ‘n’ nasty mid-pace chopping theme. With the ‘wall’ being built around two main tones; firstly we a muffled, throbbing hack, then secondly we have a collection of smaller & looped static jitters. Theses two elements rub along side each other to make an enjoyable thick wall of tone. The structure of the track for the most part remains fixed and stayed through-out, though each tone switches between the front and the back of the 'sound wall', which creates some nice crusty, crumbling and thick juddering dwells in the process. Flipping over to side two and we get a slightly deeper rubber band throb meets a skipping static jittering ‘wall’. This side seems a lot more brooding, bleak and oppressive than side one, but like side ine it stays in a fairly fixed thick and unforgiving form for the tracks complete running time. At times some of the tracks tones bring to mind the tightly looped sound of slowly torn stockings or hose which nicely links into the covers theme. This side also seems to have quite a descending or thickening lava feel about it, as it really seems to be pressing heavily down on you with the low down rumbling menace of the track- though that said it does seem to pick-up pace towards the end or maybe that’s just my imagination. All told a very worthwhile collaboration from this pair which offers up two fairly similar sounding, but brutally enjoyable sides of thick and impenetrable HNW matter.
