KK Null - Oxygen Flash [Neurot Recordings - 2008]

Oxygen Flash is another cinematic and sci-fi tinged slice of sonic exploration from KK Null taking in his usual mixture of electroinca, noise matter & field recordings. This time appearing on of all  places on Neurosis's Neurot Recordings.

Oxygen Flash follows the trend of many more recent KK Null albums with cutting the track length shorter to say around four to five minutes a piece and making the tracks often more centred around one theme or idea making it less one long ride and more a sound trip cut-up into smaller chapters or episodes. Through that’s not to say he lost his flare for dramatic shifts & tension building I guess it’s just his sound has become a little more controlled and pinpointed which has it’s up and downsides. On the plus side there’s often a real feeling of urgency about Oxygen Flash; often giving it the feeling of a more action packed sonic adventure- with one seeing in their minds eye a sci-fi hero jumping onto speeding future vehicles , jumping  from  building to building across a future city sky line and general high end adventures. On the negative side there seems less spontaneous air or danger here- it feels more scripted with a safe net always in place with less sonic flights of fancy or daring and crazy shifts in sound.

Ultimately Oxygen Flash is another consistent and enjoyable slice of what KK Null does and at the end of it all you feel like you’ve been on an adventure. It’s just at times it feels a little too predictable, safe and not daring enough.
