Tipsy - Buzz [Ipecac - 2009]The San Francisco based duo of Tipsy have been making their own brand of often sampled and turntable based lounge meets beats since 1996; Buzz is their fourth album and first on Mike Patton’s Ipecac label. In the past I think I’d heard bits and bobs and possible a whole album by the band; though I can’t recall which album it was for the life of me. And Buzz seems to pretty much follow the pattern of the stuff I’d heard before with the songs been magpie like or Frankenstein monster like collection of interlocking old lounge record elements, beats, turntable sounds and sonic touches. Though Buzz does seem to have a few ‘real’ musicians adding in various elements to the songs, but never really take away from the sampled, turntable and often jerky feel of Tipsy’s work. And sadly like their past work I've come away from much of Buzz feeling rather overwhelmed and unimpressed; you see the thing is they just seem to overload and crowd their tracks with too many elements and textures, never happy to just build up a simple vibe or atmosphere. And it’s a real pity because they have do have some interesting and creative ideas and of course one hell of a record collection to sample/use too. I’d say there’s only maybe three or four tracks out of the 16 on offer here were they thin down the sound and make less hyperactive, consistent and wholly enjoyable tracks. I guess if your really into your turntable and sampled based stuff and you like it with a bit of the exotic and lounge based vibe Buzz could well be for you. But for me there’s just way too much going on here with little of it really adding anything to make the tracks enjoyable or more cohesive pieces of music. Roger Batty
