Go to the Auton website  Auton - Any Where Out Of The World [Structures Sonores - 2008]

From Sweden comes Auton, a trio consisting of Douglas Holmquist, Petter Samuelsson and Rikard Heberling. Apart from regular instruments like electric guitar and Wurlitzer they also have a thing called a 'vibrafonette'.

There's plenty of extra sounds thrown into the mix, like piano, glockenspiel, trumpet, wordless vocals etc. The musical style can be described as instrumental pop with a jazzy, yet European, feel to it. Mellow and somewhat nostalgic, and the comparison to Jan Johansson isn't too far off the mark. His pensive mix of jazz and Swedish folk music also has an instant sense of pleasant reminiscence on the past. For instance Orgalkorall sounds like music for television, a suggestion already made by the albums artwork. A band that crossed my mind listening to Any Where Out Of The World is Tortoise (and not just the Steve Reich-ian beginning of Sagittarius A) as well as some of the things coming out of Seattle like some of the projects led by Wayne Horvitz. Composed jazz, structured but with room for improvisation but always playful yet sedate and warm. Especially the lack of percussion (rhytmical that is, technically the vibrafonette is also percussion of course) gives the music a natural calm, like the waves of the sea. Only occasionally there's a little distortion added like in Krater to make some extra ripples, while in Prism the music takes a more abstract and mysterious form.

Any Where Out Of The World is very nice on the ears but the masterful compositions and arrangements make sure that it's far from shallow easy listening. Ideal music for the dark, wintry nights of this last month of the year too. Music to 'chill' in the best possible sense of the word.
