Klangmutationen - Schwarzha [Utech - 2008]

The Klangmutationen project hails from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Schwarzha is a bleak, grimly atmospheric and often ugly four track album that utilizes heavy and suffocating improv guitar scapes, avant and pained dense sax honks and more grim, soured and cinematic guitar scapes.

Track one ushers in the barren and uneasy tone nicely with a series of gloomy tolling, bending and warbling guitar elements. Then track two enters following  in a similar tone to the first track but mainly focusing the guitar in on this wonderful tone much like what a giant grey and grim spring  slowly bending back and forth might sound like. At about a quarter of a way into the 25 minute track the guitar is left to feed back hum and a manic and dense wall of sax honking is put in place for the rest of the track. Track three starts in a similar manner to the other tracks with bending ugly guitar scaping before becoming quite a lot more noisy and doomy with its wavering discordant chugs of guitar, before dipping towards the end into more eerie guitar neck and string runs, hits and texturing. And lastly track four ends the album in very much more atmospheric and eerier mood with a mixture of  subtle guitar picking and weird almost vocalising tones that have quite an oriental edge to them.

All told a rather satisfying excise in grim, ugly and at times eerier sound scaping that wavers between easter and western harmonics. It’s certainly made me curious about the projects other works
