Nebelung - Vigil [Eislicht - 2008]Vigil is a highly polished and often tuneful collection of sombre, forest bound folk songs, that are striped down yet darkly passionate with most of the tracks consisting just of layered acoustic guitar playing, kettle drums and sombre, deep and dark melodic german vocals. There are also subtle traces of accordion, violin and bass weaved in here and there but the main focus are the intricate, melancholy and darkly melodic acoustic guitars that dip in folk and classic genres with their crystalline dark beauty, and the deeply passionate and sombre vocals. Vigil brings to mind slow walks through autumnal evergreen forest, ones heart heavy with loss, but slowly & surely the forest sights, sounds and smells comfort and give some kind of melancholy relief as you stumble on and on. Though most of the songs have a similar instrumental base the tracks manage to be consistent and varied through out, having a nice mix of both vocal and instrumental tracks. The cd cover, booklet and inner pictures feature very fitting black and white pictures of sombre and darkly beautiful forest landscapes which really tops off the enclosed music perfectly. This is the first full length release from this two piece with only one ep before it, been very focus and original for a debut album- just simply, beautiful and downcast collection of songs that you'll want to revisit again and again Roger Batty
