Go to the Sten Ove Toft website  Sten Ove Toft - Lit De parade [ROGGBIF - 2007]

From Norway comes Sten Ove Toft, busy in several projects (like Ryfylke, Waffelpung and Röyskatt) and with Lit De parade he presents an ambient, noise suite in seven parts. The imprint may suggest something colourful (ROGGBIF is an acronym of the colours in the colourspectrum), but like its artwork light has little business in this music.

The idea of Lit De parade is that when famous, important people die, like members of the royal family and state leaders they get publicly displayed on the deathbed. Lying still as they appear to be, there's a process going on, that of rot. Well, there would be if it wasn't for the embalming procedure preceding its public display, but let's not start nitpicking. Earlier works of Toft reportedly are more brutal, Lit De parade is quite subtle and varied, brooding behind the façade, to stay in line with the concept.

From the first, almost ultrasonic, hissings you know this is gonna be a dark ride. The musical events are relatively short which provides a lot of variation, if not sometimes a shock effect. Over the course of the album you find yourself in various atmospheres and moods. Sometimes a low ambient rumble lulls you into a more relaxed mindstate, one moment later a heap of hostile noise gets hurled at you, but such shockeffects do not happen very often. Most changes of mood take place gradually though, slowly ascending and descending.

Sten Ove Toft presents an excellent and wellcrafted soundscape on his first studio effort. Drone, ambient and noise are are molded into a mysterious and murky atmosphere while treating the ears on some interesting sounds.
