Demons - Evocation [No Fun Productions - 2007]Demons debut album is an ugly, sinister, nasty throbbing and droning collection analog synth basied tracks. Bringing to mind soundtrack music for either a very demented & sadistic sci-fi or horror movie or ones own bent drug addled nightmares. The projects made up Nate Young (of Wolf Eyes) and Steve Kenney and you can certainly hear the Wolf eyes connection from their more filmatic work and drawn out and sinister work, but this does manger make it’s own diabolic and nasty sound. Think early Moog music of the likes of Mort Garson- but really made to sound nasty, disturbing and dangerous with a sinister industrial edge. All the tracks start from fairly basic sinister often bass led synth patterns that throb and circle then they pair improvise, stretch, abuse and morph synth tones over the top and though this never total explodes into all out noise it gets near here and there. On offer are four tracks in all each coming in around the 10 minute mark & while all of them are excellent my favourite here is the last untitled track with it’s simply yet very sinister bassy synth crawl pattern- it’s gives such a great feel of been stalked or watched down as you walk down dank rubbish strewn and decaying alleyways, really build up the feeling of paranoia and fear nicely. It all comes in a stiff/ thick cardboard min-gatefold with weird black and white dripping and decaying landscapes which bring to mind either nightmarish planets scapes or the sinister decaying continents of a deranged mind put in picture form, topping off this fine collection of disturbed and dread filled sound worlds perfectly.
