Ovil Bianca - Gravity=Love [(Kraak)³ - 2001]

Earational Festival, most of my spare money was spend on releases from the Belgian label." />
A new name on the experimental electronic music label (Kraak)³ is Ovil Bianca. After seeing this artist live at the excellent Earational Festival, most of my spare money was spend on releases from the Belgian label. The (Kraak)³ label has built up quite a reputation in the electronic music scene since Johan and Dave founded the label in 1997. Starting as an underground distributor and mail order for music and labels that were difficult to find, it is a highly respected producer of quality electronic music nowadays. The music released goes from post-rock to electronic drones to unusual dance tunes, covering artists like Janek Schaefer, Köhn, Shifts, Wio, Toss, and of course Ovil Bianca.

Ovil Bianca is the name for the musical outlet of Tim Wijnants from Ghent, Belgium. The young composer has just released his debut album "Gravity=Love", while doing several live shows throughout Western Europe. Ovil Bianca incorporates a lot of different sounds into the music. Glitches, noise, loops, samples, filters, effects and other sound sources are melted together to create a electronic sonicscape that demands quite a lot for the inexperienced listener. However, the music does have some sort of structure that makes this CD actually well worth the attention. According to the biography, Tim Wijnants is strongly influenced by guitar bands from the past, which is obvious on this album. Guitars are one of the main instruments here, although they do not really sound like guitars. Everything is manipulated on the computer, no laptop and high-tech software though. An old pc with even older software produces this interesting result. Furthermore, samples recorded with a portable minidisk player fill the remaining parts of the music.

Although I am sure that Ovil Bianca's music can best be experienced at a live performance, this album shows the immense talent Tim Wijnants has. The music is challenging and fascinating, the atmosphere is mystical and dark. The fitting packaging, on which the musical sources are mentioned, is excellent as well. The album is available from the (Kraak)³ website. Lovers of experimental guitar glitch music released by Mego and Corpus Hermeticum should definitely check this out.
