Religious Knives - Remains [No Fun Productions - 2007]Religious Knives conjure up expansive and dense soundworlds, mixing b-movie like or low grade Tangerine dream synth throb and pierce, slow looped percussive matches, twanging and muddling guitar elements, chanted/mumbled male/female vocals and eastern edges. Coming up with a rather original and distinctive sound like a lost soundtrack to some late 70’s or early 80’s surreal horror movie or bizarre easter influence art-house movie. Remains brings together three out of print releasers by this New York based project, which consists of members of Double Leopards and Mouthus. It’s quite surprising to find this on Carlos Giffoni’s No Fun Label, as one would have imagined that the New York noise head would want to concentrate on just noise like releasers, but this clearly shows that he wants to release interesting and experimental music what ever the genre. I guess you can see traces of noise here and there, but most of the time it’s been laid back, sinister or tripped-out to summon up too much noise matter. On offer are five tracks most moving towards the 15 minute mark, meaning you get chance to get rather lost in the haunted, sinister and hypotonic synth, guitar and percussive structures. You can imagine watching strange mirages appearing out of desert heat haze. Or weird horror based tales of furniture that eat its victims, or flared hero’s adventures into reality bending trips into a mix of gothic and psychedelic horror. A must buy for fans of weird soundtracks, dark and mysterious psychedelic synth weaved jams, and general involving and retro sounding weirdness. To find out more and buy direct go here. Roger Batty
