Koobaatoo Asparagus - Between The Wall [No Skinny Jeans - 2025]Between The Wall severs up a thickly churning and grit-rattling slab of HNW from this highly prolific/long-running California-based project. The single track slides in at the twenty-nine minute mark, and while it's fairly simplistic in its presentation, it makes for an entrancing/ nicely world around you block-out ride. This is a self-released affair. For the cover artwork, we get a black and white picture of a Greek or Roman carved stone male figure, lounging back, eyes wide & bare chest pulled tight. The link to check it out is here.
The self-titled track is built around a very set & secure mix of low-end/ slightly juddering churn, which is topped with a flow of rattling mini-grain grit. Together, these elements create a rewarding contrast- with the low end pressing down nicely persistently, and the small elements focusing your attention. I could easily have listened to this ‘wall’ for another half an hour, as it so nicely entranced me.
More often than not, Koobaatoo Asparagus serves up basic, if engaging, wall craft, which is primed for drifting off into. And that’s exactly what Between The Wall is- it’s nothing world-changing, particularly original, or mould-breaking- it’s just another consistent release from the project. Roger Batty
