No Fun HNW - Unflinching [Filthy Sounds Recordings - 2025]Unflinching is a short, extreme, nasty, head-battering slice of walled noise from this South Carolina project. It’s truly an unrelenting attack, and as it’s a YouTube release, it features simple but effective brutal imagery. The release/ track can be found here- in all, it’s just over eleven minutes of unfettered intensity.
The ‘wall’ is built around a crude sonic map of purring stale air drone, ratting static grain sear, and awkwardly sliding on/ off mid-to-higher pitch sustains. This creates a track that is sleazy, suffocating, and intense- where one is constantly on edge, ready for things to get even worse. The track gets even more nicely seared as it resolves.
The visual element is just looped black and white footage of a balaclava figure bashing down a large rock again and again. And truly, when watched with the noise, it nicely notches up the intensity even more, so I’d certainly advise this be the way to play it.
As a project, No Fun HNW has been all about bringing back the more crude, unpleasant, and ear-searing side of the wall noise form. And Unflinching is another good example of this. I do hope we get more active use of moving imagery in the project's upcoming releases. Roger Batty
