Arboreal/Whore’s Breath - Split [Stems Tapes - 2025]Here we have a wall noise split- bringing together work from projects from Bangkok and Cincinnati, Ohio. Each serves up around thirty minutes ‘wall’- with each sounding fairly different. This is a digital release appearing on Stems Tapes, with the cover artwork featuring a picture of a waterfall cliffside- on its bottom, thick moss, and on its top scraggly/ spiky plants. The release can be found here
First up, we have the dead on thirty minutes of “Theorem” by Arboreal. It must be a good few years since I’ve heard anything from this Bangkok project, and I must say the ‘wall’ is a nice taut & tense affair. It’s built around a constant bass judder/ hack, which surrounds an arcing static tone. Visually, I’m getting an image of standing on a vast, continually running tank tread conveyor belt, as blue electro lighting shifts above.
Next, we have “Shambles” a just under thirty-six minute track from Cincinnati, Ohio’s Whore’s Breath, which is one of the most prolific/ yet still highly quality consistent wall noise projects. Here we find a decidedly watery/ organic sounding ‘wall’ which brings together a roughly rumbling rattling, and a deep splattering liquid cascading tone. This is both rather unequal and entrancing ‘wall’.
In conclusion, this is an excellent wall noise split- it’s great to hear new work from Arboreal, and the Whore Breath ‘wall’ is wonderfully distinctive. Roger Batty
