Raté - L7hN [Self release - 2025]L7hN is a digital release that serves up two roughshod and rapidly battering examples of walled noise from this Bordeaux-based project. Each track runs at around the thirteen-minute mark- shifting between an all-out bass-ripped attack, and a blend of constant churning crunch/sinister hiss. Raté has been active since Nov last year, releasing around thirty releases to date, so a fairly prolific wall project. I’ve reviewed a few of the project's releases now, finding it (largely) a consistent wall noise project, and a worthy addition to the French wall noise scene- which of course has birthed some great acts like Vomir, Chier, and all the projects connected to Julien Skrobek.
We open up with “vfV7Ve”. Here we find a rapidly racing blend of blunt rub ‘n’ reel, sparking static feast, and murky bass rattle. It brings to mind images of an undersea diver swimming rapidly away, trying to avoid a building pace underwater tsunami. It’s a great manic and roughshod ‘wall’, with at points moments where the tones seem blend/ blur because of their increasing pace, though in reality I think it’s a set/ fixed ‘wall’.
Next/ lastly, we have “GF7bgK “- here we find a blend of set gas like hiss, constantly juddering rip, and a distant roughshod bass hack. Though the ‘wall’ is rapid, it manages to feel both crude & cumbersome, with undertones of manic unease. You just keep expecting something very unsettling to suddenly come from the ‘wall’- yet it never does.
L7hN is another worthy release from Raté- this is a self put out digital release, so head over to hear/download it here. Roger Batty
