a.drift - A. Live Transmission [Inner Demons Records - 2024]

A. Live Transmission is a single/developing twenty-one-minute track that blends purring ‘n’ rounding noise drone matter, dialogue samples, jarring tone drops, off-kilter keyboard additions, and wayward beats.

As far as I can gather a.drift has been active for two years or so- putting out this & one previous single-track digital release in 2022. I can’t find out where the project is from, the only other thing I can find out it’s the one-man project of one Brendan Michael Place.

The 3inc mini CDR appears on  Florida’s Inner Demons Records- presented in their house style folded over/ monochrome cover packaging- which on this release is a high contrast/ lo-fi picture of white-on-shapes arranged in an almost angular face-like sequence. The release can be found here.

We open with a distant tunnelling drone, a man says, ‘get ready for a.drift’- then the drone seems to get more persistent, yet then fades again, to come back more purring/louder/more rounding. As we progress, this on-off/ loud whispering/robot-like vocal element is added here and there, and from here things nicely build-  with an awkward/ uneven beat pattern, an almost harmonic purr ’n’ drag, rising billows, whispered voices, and this ring-more-piercing drone.  The whole thing unfolds in a rewardingly unpredictable manner, with at times some most rewarding dense weaves of interlocking tones.

A.Live Transmission rather sits in a difficult-to-genre-label place- at times it’s drone, at other it’s like a primal electro-jamming, at other times wayward noise, and at others some weird/ wonderful transmission from another dimension. I’ll certainly be looking out for future work from a.drift.
