Massimo Toniutti - The Clear Observatory (Eyepiece Musique) [Klanggalerie - 2024]The Clear Observatory (Eyepiece Musique) is fifty five minute trip into slowly tolling, reverberation, and eerily shimmering ambience from Italian sound art designer/ experimental musician Massimo Toniutti. The single track feels very much like a uneasy ritual- where there is no beginning or end- just the eternal present. The album appears as CD on Austrias Klanggalerie- presented in a four panel glossy digipak- on it’s front is a what looks like a changeless pebble beach- with a few places of glinting reflection. Inside we are presented with vast sun going down horizon.
The single 55.25 track is built around a mixture of slowly chiming gong tone, light/ eerier tonal reverberation, and slow-mo ebbs ‘n’ hits- which at points offer up subtle moments of feedback. As mentioned earlier there is a constant flow to the work- so really in theory you could have it on constant repeat, and not know where or when you are in the track.
Though there is certainly a loose/ little formal structure to the work- it’s both eventful and moodily engaging throughout it’s nearing one hour runtime. And once it gets started you feel your self slowly but surely sucked into it’s meditative, yet at points slight uneasy flow ‘n’ drift.
If you enjoy difficult to map/ yet rewarding trips into low key ritual ambience The Clear Observatory (Eyepiece Musique) -will most certainly appeal!. Roger Batty
