Rafał Kołacki - Mowa Tworzenia [Zoharum - 2024]Mowa Tworzenia ( Speech of Creation) is a ten-track album that blends industrial texturing- be it drone-based, or more active fare with field recordings. The tone moves from eerier and uneasy, to more churning and semi-rhythmic, to more abstract and detailed. Rafał Kołacki is a Polish sound maker- who has been active since the early 2000s, releasing nine albums to his name- though he’s also involved with projects such as Molok Mun, Mammoth Ulthana, and Hati. This ten-track album from early on this year appears on Poland’s Zoharum- cover artwork on this ltd vinyl release, we find a stark blue circle on a white back with minimal texts. It has a pressing of just 100 copies
The ten tracks each run between one and five-minute mark- with a fair selection of different types of tones, textures, and elements on display. We open with the creepy uneasy of “Kobiety Dłoni” which brings together a sinisterly hovering drone, weird liquid drips, and creaks ‘n’ knocks. There’s the steady pulsing- but-distant machine tone knock meets waving reverb of “Dziewięć Kocich Żywiołów”.
Moving onto the second half/ side we have the circling, slightly glitching tone revolve meets static purr brood of “Bazahr”. We have the throbbing purr buzz ‘n’ churn of “Omphalos”. Or the steady mixed/ slightly liquid-like knock ‘n’ chop of “Alatyr” which feels like you are stuck in the middle of a slowly moving giant mixing bowl.
There is no doubt that Mr Kołacki manages to mix and blend industrial textures & field recordings in a creative and varied manner. Mowa Tworzenia was my first taste of his work, and it most certainly wont be my last- for those who enjoy that sweet spot between the abstract and formally, if often moodily musical. Roger Batty
