Koobaatoo Asparagus - Soul Snatcher [No Skinny Jeans - 2024]Here’s a two-track slice of bleak ‘n' bothersome old-school walled noise from this prolific California project. Each track is self-titled and runs at dead on the thirty-four-minute mark- with each being as punishing as the other. As with most Koobaatoo Asparagus releases, this appears on the project's own label No Skinny Jeans. We get a simple monochrome affair- featuring a murky picture of a grown figure who is meant to be the Soul Snatcher- to me, it looks rather like a contrast-heavy picture of the killer in the recent slasher In A Violent Nature- though this may be a coincidence, and it may be older than it looks. Anyway, the release can be found here.
Both tracks are self-titled, and the first track is a mix of a rapidly rolling bass billow, a cluttering mid, and hazy static subtone grit. It feels like the audio equivalent of constantly rolling down and down a building-sized mountain of bucked & broken cardboard boxes.
The second track is built around a constant bass billow/ drone- this is edged by a very slightly glitching/static reeling tone. This ‘wall’ has a very taut yet weighty pressing quilty to it, and I really enjoy how at points the static reeling tone feels like it may fully pull itself out, but it never does.
Both tracks here have fairly similar tonal ranges, and neither is the most complex of ‘walls’- but if you are after unrelenting head crushing brutally, then Soul Snatcher will most certainly fulfil your need. Roger Batty
