Koobaatoo Asparagus - Harsh Prophecy [No Skinny Jeans - 2024]Harsh Prophecy features two extremely raw & ear roasting examples of the walled noise form from this highly prolific Californian-based project. Each track nears the thirty-six-minute mark, and each is a searing & sonic nerve flaying as the other. The album is a self-released affair. The cover artwork is a drawing of a sun-faced god in long robes, being pulled along by two long-haired humanoid figures. Drop in here to hear/ get hold of the release.
Both tracks are Utitled here. So the first ‘wall’ brings together a rapid, raw, and completely unforgiving mix of a rolling & thick roast, skittering sear, and loose subtone gallop. It feels very much like you are been dragged along at fall speed by a couple of horses down a rough & rocky hillside.
Track two feels slightly more defined & roughly seared compared to the first track- though it’s still damn brutal. The ‘wall’ brings together a blend of rattling bass drag, muffled rush, and sub-tone clutter. If the first track was been dragged along behind some horses on a rough hill- this sounds like you have been dragged along on a more even concrete-like surface, though over time this is still as battering as the first track. Around midway, we shift into a blend of thick bass purr & grind, and skittering static grit- which feels like it could grind to a stop, but never does.
Harsh Prophecy certainly lives up to the harsh part of its title and some- this is very much a release for those looking for crude ‘n’ brittle bone-breaking old-school walled noise. Roger Batty
