Nimh - Before And After Silence [Zoharum - 2024]Before And After Silence is an eight-track CD looking back at the early 1990s work of Nimh ( aka Italian-born Giuseppe Verticchio). All of the simple part-named pieces focus on droning & at points crude ambience- with some quite blown-out & noisy undercurrents. The release is presented in a monochrome fold-out mini gatefold- which features contrast-heavy snapshots of Verticchio in the studio. It’s a simple, yet effective bit of packaging that points towards the crude & lightly noise-touched feel of the tracks within.
We move from the slowly churning glum march of “Part 01” a just over twelve-minute track, which mixes low-end purring throb & mid-ranged climbs- with a later addition of higher, though still brooding synth line plods 'n' darts. We have the rolling key stabs meet murky tone oscillations of “ Part 03”.
Moving onto the second half of the release we have “Part 06” which is all slow-mo/ distorted harmonics, light industrial gallop, and skittering tone wavering. There's the glitchy swirls ‘n’ pops, locked tolling-to-bounding key harmonics, and wiry pitch swirls of “Part 08”.
If you enjoy your ambience a little noised-up, damaged, and lightly seared then Before And After Silence will appeal. Let us hope Mr Verticchio dips back into his past again, as this was a largely consistent collection of work. Roger Batty
