Kaboom Karavan - Fiasko! [Miasmah - 2024]

Wonderfully chaotic, Kaboom Karavan's latest, Fiasko!, has a quartet bringing together the musical madness through myriad instruments, electronics, and vocal work. Somewhere between free jazz and jam band, this fairly unclassifiable selection of songs piles on the sound while still remaining intriguing and entertaining. Unpredictable but not without purpose, Fiasko! is ten songs of instrumental ingenuity and experimental excess.

On the surface, Fiasko! seems to be an imaginative interweaving of styles, instruments, and influence, but upon further and deeper playthroughs, the beauty and coherence becomes more evident. Although very true that the overall tone sticks closer to the experimental/improvisation realm, there is an underlying goal that each member sticks to, creating pieces that can almost feel are pre-written. This cohesion speaks well to the band members, their skill with their respective instruments, and their commitment to musicianship. But more importantly, what is behind this sound and how is it put together? With four musicians spread over a variety of approaches, Kaboom Karavan allows themselves an amazing spread in sound, but is able to keep it reined in so that Fiasko! moves effectively toward its end goal. From the traditional guitars, violins, trumpets, and trombones all the way out to less seen (in Western popular music, at least) instruments like the sarangi, jadagan, and Uilleann pipes, Kaboom crafts their pieces with intent and a solid background of familiarity. Even if one isn't familiar with the sounds created by some of the more exotic instruments, their natural sound will still reverberate within and relay that sense of comfort and the resultant notes/tones will quickly be recognizable. Underlying all of this well crafted combination of sounds, tones, textures, and vibes is an almost cinematic score that transcends classification but still brings about an extremely evocative experience.

Fiasko! utilizes many different musical approaches to reach its goal and all four musicians comprising Kaboom Karavan work together with skill and creativity to make the journey very enjoyable. While the somewhat chaotic pieces may make it harder for some listeners their first time through, it is highly encouraged to revisit and respin the album when possible. There is a fantastic reward within and the more one traverses this work, the easier it becomes for all the beautiful pieces to access and enjoy. To check it out
