Rough Sex Quartet/Terminal Erection - Split [Narcolpeisa - 2024]This is a c90 split bringing together two scuzzy, sleazy, and nasty examples of HNW from these two long-term sonic perverts. The release appears on Portugal’s Narcolpeisa. I’m reviewing a digital promo of the release- so I can’t comment on the sleeve artwork in detail- but it seemingly finds a string-tied sleeve with dirt inside a baggie. If you fancy a copy, drop by here.
First up we have the Rough Sex Quartet track- this is self-titled and runs at the forty-seven and seven-second mark. The ‘wall’ opens as a blunt ‘n’ baying mixture of constantly rolling ‘n’ battering low end, cluttering hiss, and muffled/ slightly deformed rumble. By around the mid-way point, there is a more sustained whistling tone that has become present- and this nicely intensifies things. With the last ten or so minutes focusing in on a blend of slow-mo clutter, hiss, and churn- all topped with a sustained whistle. The whole thing feels underfed by a seared & kinky industrialised quality.
The second track is of course from Terminal Erection, and is entitled “Thanatosis”. It runs at two seconds sly of the forty-five-minute mark. Here we have a more hazed/ slurred/ muffled/ at points shifting take on walled noise. We open with a blend of rushing but meaty lows, churning static grain fuzz, and billowing throb. As the track moves on we can make out fleeting darts of mid-ranged whips, higher bays, and compacting/ grinding into each other. From time to time, this alarming screaming type element suddenly appears.
This split is an extremely crude ride into nasty and perverse HNW with an effective undercurrent of unease often darting to the surface- to snap ‘n’ whip at you. Roger Batty
