Dosis Letalis - Walled In Emotions [Cruel Symphonies - 2022]Here we have a walled noise c90/ digital release that attempts to put a series of eight different emotions into noise form. It’s certainly a challenging concept/ idea- but thankfully we have one of the masters of the form behind this release Dosis Letalis, so it's a wonderful skilled & varied trip. The release is a few years old dating from 2022- it was released on Syracuse, New York’s Cruel Symphonies. It came in an edition of 70 copies- sadly these are now all sold out at source- though I believe Dosis Letalis, and a few other distributors may still have copies. The see-through C90s are labelled on both sides- coming presented in black & red sleeve- which on its fold-out featuring a selection of different emotions shown on a face.
Each of the tracks run around the ten to eleven-minute mark. We open with “Anticipation” this is a tense & taut mix of micro buzzing & static pop ‘n’ snap- with the whole thing really carrying over its chosen emotion. As we move through the first side we have “Anger” here we find a fuller & more ragged ‘wall’ bringing together a mixture of descending hacking, rolling rumble, and jittering- all the tones are of a similar mid-range, so this creates a feeling of disorientation/ unhinged rage- which once again fits perfectly.
Moving onto the second side we have “Fear” which shifts between tight beaded crackle, and set churning/ thick static roll. With the album playing out with “Sadness”( which was recorded under the Nistaville project name) here we find a mixture of low-key aquatic churn & persistent cold crackle- together these create a feeling of weighty/ numbing melancholia.
Walled In Emotions is a varied & masterful example of the walled noise form- and I do hope Dosis Letalis, attempts a second vol with this theme. This project may have slowed down with its release output in recent years, but it always puts so much time/ effort into its themes/ wall-making which is of course very clear here. Well worth tracking down a physical copy if you can! Roger Batty
