Thin Mountain - We Can't Reach Her Or Hear Her Voice [Deadline - 2023]

We Can't Reach Her Or Hear Her Voice is a two-track journey into thick & atmospheric walled noise from Thin Mountain- one of the projects of respected US noisemaker Sean E. Matzus (theNIGHTproduct, Black Leather Jesus, last Rape, Thewhitehorse). The release appears as either a Ltd run tape( not sure of the numbers), or a digital download- I’m reviewing the latter.

The Thin Mountain project has been active since the year 2020, and has to date released around fifteen releases- taking in cassette, CDR, and digital releases. The project often has low-key horror themes to its release- for example, this release's cover takes in a creepy picture of decaying children’s dolls hung up.

Both tracks here are untitled- with each running between the fifteen & a half, and sixteen minutes.  So the first track is rather disorienting -if- kind of oddly soothing/ enveloping blend of set- yet rushing static grain,  a murky drone, and slicing/ chopping micro sub-tones. The ‘wall’ is very full- yet the way it’s presented it’s difficult for one’s mind to latch onto one pattern or flow- so as a result we get a constantly rolling maelstrom effect.

The second track is a little more defined- though it’s still difficult to keep a hold of set patterns. It’s built around this set descending line of rapidly rolling-yet-thin static. On top of this, Matzus places darting rips, drags, light buffets, and flitters- these are in a similar tonal range to the main element, so as to create this feeling of either darkness or shadows shifting- as if there is something strange, deformed & other just beyond one’s perception.

We Can't Reach Her Or Hear Her Voice is another consistent release from Thin Mountain. Sure the first track didn’t feel that creepy, but its blurring/ hazing flow was most rewardingly engulfing. But the second track is a master class in subtle unsettling wall-craft. To check it out for yourself drop by here
