Nurse With Wound - Shipwreck Radio: Final Broadcasts [ICR Distribution - 2006]Shipwreck radio has been one of the most varied and released material heavy concepts of Nurse With Wound's 20 year plus career. We've had 2 double cd releases and this last disk as general releases, then on top of that we've had two more limited recordings. Adding up to 8 hours or so of material, and to be frank there just was not enough interesting elements or decent tracks to take up that length. Sadly this album highlights this point clearly and comes off as one of NWW's most disappointing releases, with the feeling of really scraping the bottom of the barrel. The project started off live as Stapleton and Potter setting up audiobase on the small Norwegian islands of Lofoten for two months to moulding, playing with the sounds around them and then broadcasting them on the local radio station. The first volume of Shipwreck Radio stands as one of the high points of their material in the last ten years or so, it had interesting variation of sounds and clever and breathtaking audio editing. It both sounded both alien, haunted and amusing. Then we had the second volume which was passable and for the most part concentrated on more standard drone come dark ambient textures, hardly inventive or new for either NWW or ambient/drone music in general. Now we come to this single disk the Final Broadcast, Which is made up of two tracks. The first track June 22, is much like the material that graced volume 2: sort of a drone /dark ambient mix that sounds in places vaguely haunted and effective in its grim vibe, but mostly feels like ambient sound design by numbers, this goes on for 20 minutes or so. Then we have July 13 which frankly I find an insult to both NWW's fanbase and Stapleton> and Potters talents. It's basically made up of the dialogue from the first vol 'I only speak English' which is then stretched and dragged along though various effects and peddles for 20 plus minutes. Nothing more, nothing less. There's nothing clever, entertaining or amusing about it, it's just dull and very uninspired toytown audio-art. Why they decided to release this is beyond me.Really only of interest to those who buy everything by NWW, otherwise avoid at all cost. A real low point in the musical output of one of experimental music's odd sons. Roger Batty
