III - .076 [Self release - 2023].076 is a two-track digital release from this Calgary, Alberta-based wall noise project- which has a penchant for triangles and ritual-like scribblings. Each track slides in at the twenty minutes, with a nice variation between the two tracks- moving from busy and choppy, to droning and rattling. The III project has seemingly been active since 2014. Putting out to date seventy-six releases- which are all numerical entitled. All of the projects cover artwork features either scrawled, or slightly more carefully drawn single triangles surrounded by what looks like ritual detail- be it shapes, numbers, letters, or lines.
Each track runs at exactly twenty minutes. And first up we have “0.76.1” here we find a decidedly busy, at points almost glitching ‘wall’. It’s constructed around a jumping crackle, a cluttering grainy tone, and a sliding( almost rhythmically industrial) hiss. These elements are fed together in a nicely appealing & well-defined manner- so you can clearly define the shape of each texture. Though as you’d expect with this type of busy texturally based affairs, it’s sometimes difficult to hold onto/follow certain patterns. I’m not sure if it’s a trick of the ‘wall’, but it seemingly becomes slightly more (loosely) rhythmic as it goes along.
“.076.2” is built around a more muffled & lightly reverbed selection of textures. We have a distant & droning machine-like tone, a purring clutter- with a selection of knocking, tightly clanging, and rattling sub-tones. Once again there are industrial rhythmic undertones present- but they are more warped & worn- and at points there’s an almost weathered organic feel to the proceedings.
.076 features two well tooled, creative & engaging examples of wall-noise. I like the decidedly cryptic theme/ feel to this release- as it really lets you put your twist on the tracks. It was released via the project's own bandcamp on the 13th of November 2023. And you can hear/ download the release here. Roger Batty
