Rotoscope - Great Curves [Jester Records - 2001]

Rotoscope was formed by Andreas Mjøs in 1999. It's a six piece of artists and performers with diverse musical backgrounds, including Lars Horntveth and Rune Brøndbo. Some of these names might sound familiar to some of you, since both Andreas Mjøs and Lars Horntveth play in Jaga Jazzist, Rune Brøndbo has released two albums (one of it was nominated for a Norwegian Grammy award). The band remixed with producer Jørgen Træen their original songs to a hybrid between pop, jazz, noise and experimental electronic music. No, it's not easy to swallow, but it is good.

Now imagine Autechre mixed with some Aphex Twin, John Zorn and Massive Attack and you will understand what kind of music Rotoscope released on 'Great Curves'. The band remixed their original songs into abstract musical structures. I wonder how the original recordings sound. We will never know, except if they release it on next album. They could be the first band who released a remix album before releasing the original recordings.

The 10 tracks on the cd range from noisy soundscapes to poppy and jazzy (saxophone) songs. On some tracks we can hear the beautiful vocals from Christine Sandtorv, she does a perfect job with her high, Björkish voice. Especially 'Carpet Illusions' (download the track on M[M]) and tenth track 'Traveller' are great songs. Both are a bit more accesible then the other tracks. 'Traveller' has this long jazz ending, which is a perfect way to end the album.

No need to explain if you have to get this album or not. If you're into experimental electronic music like the examples I mentioned earlier then check out 'Great Curves'. Only available at Jester Records.
