Whores Breath — The Beast
The Beast is an exercise in manically nerve-racking, and totally unforgiving junk noise walling from Whores Breath (aka David Hilshorst). The just over twenty-seven-minute track finds this Cincinnati project truly going all out to create an impenetrable mass of ratting, forking, luching, and grating noise
This is a digital release on South Carolina’s Dying Monolith HNW. For the cover artwork, we have a monochrome picture looking down from the top of the track of a rollercoaster- it looks wooden and very old, so a real bone-rattler.
The single track featured here is entitled “Batter, Bruised, & Nauseous”. It opens, well, to sound mass akin to several speeding roller coaster carts crashing together- with a mix of pummelling smash, manic rattle, searing grate, and very rapidly spinning metal.
As the wall continues, you start to make at patterns/ sound shapes within the mass- like wayward sways of rip ‘n’ bay, cascading falls though jagged/ broken junk, speed-up grates, cluttering gallops, and jittering spanner ‘n’ spokes like overloads.
Once again, The Beast finds Hilshorst trying to do something a little different with the walled noise form. I do hope he experiments more within the junk metal side of things, as this release is most rewarding with its dense & detailed wall of sound.
