Tungu & Tabata — Paranormal Awakening
Paranormal Awakening is a moody & often seared blend of blues-tinged psych rock freakouts, off-kilter to cinematic soundtracking, and atmospheric noise. This project brings together Mitsuru Tabata (The Boredoms) and Tungu, a Ukrainian experimental electronica project.
The eight-track album appears on Fourth Dimension Records. The CD comes presented in a four-panel monochrome digipak, which features atmospheric pictures of fallen tree roots, wooden walkways disappearing off into shadowy reeds, and gnarled tree branches. This release is limited to just 200 copies.
Over the album's eight tracks, the pair manage to weave a decidedly twisting ‘n turning sonic landscape, which shifts in & out of different moods/ genres. We go from “Eternally Entwined with The Trees” which finds up front blues psych guitar soloing blending with moodily simmering electro noise hiss ‘n’ scape. Onto “Intellect Of The Root System” which mixes sinisterly stabbing & gliding sci-fi synth, baying noise guitar scaping, effects pedal wail, and snippets of distant bounding piano.
Later on, we have “Sculpture With Elegant” which finds throbbingly rising Vangelis-like synth hover & tremor, meeting shredding & baying guitar tone scapes. With latter on percussive bubbling electronics ease into the sound picture. The album plays out with the title track- it opens with crookedly baying & shambling -yet- raw guitars over a steadly glow electro drone sound bed. As we progress, a more blipping ‘n’ bobbing electro tones appear, along with( I think) tricking water samples.
Paranormal Awakening certainly takes its listener on a very moody, yet often searing instrumental journey. Both Tabata & Tungu complement each other nicely for an eventful/ engaging sound ride.
