The Dillinger Escape Plan — Irony Is A Dead Scene
The band plays as tight as if they play a hardcore version of jazz, and as you can expect from Mike Patton, he does an amazing job with the vocals, which is kinda similar to his work with Fantômas and Tomahawk.
I let a good friend of mine listen to Irony Is A Dead Scene, he is mostly into extreme metal, so I was wondering what his thoughts were about this EP. Either he would like it or hate it. I expected he would dislike the vocals, but like the extreme side of the music. I was wrong. After playing the first song Hollywood Squares, he laughed out loud and asked me how much money I paid for this CD. With the second track, Pig Latin, he read the lyrics and asked me about them. I'm not sure what they mean and I can only guess. Usually I'm not interested in lyrics, but these seem quite interesting. With track 3, When Good Dogs Do Bad Things, he asked me to remove the CD from the player. Not cool, because this is my favourite track from the EP. He never listened to the last track, the excellent Come To Daddy cover from Aphex Twin. He wouldn't know it's a cover, because he never heard the original. So, after three tracks I removed the CD. Too bad, because I really like it, and I've been playing it all week long now.
I guess I like it because I'm used to this kind of music. Irony Is A Dead Scene is a must have for Dillinger Escape Plan fans. With Mike Patton on vocals they made an unique EP, that's also interesting for Fantômas and Tomahawk fans. Personally, I find the vocals the only bad factor on the older DEP releases, and now with Patton they have a perfect vocalist, to bad it's temporarily. So, if you're looking for a band, that's playing an unique kind of metal, get this EP as soon as possible.
