Sabotheur — Self Titled

This self-titled CD is a decidedly haphazard & often highly chaotic bringing together of amass Dada vocalizing, unwell improv, and primal-to-deranged retarded folk. This CD is the first release from this new project that brings together two infamous names from the French experimental underground/ noise scenes- Romain ‘Roro’ Perrot , of Legendary wall noise project Vomir, and various low-fi improv/ shit folk projects. And Yves Botz- of noise band Dustbreeders & free form noise project Mesa Of The Lost Women.

This CD release was a joint underground label release from the following 4iB Records, Decimation Sociale, Nostromo, Poço Discos. The CD is presented in a mini gatefold- on it’s front we get a moody outside shot of Perrot and Botz- with the inside gatefold showing the pair in full manic guitar flow. This release was Ltd to 300 copies- and I’m fairly sure most of the labels still have copies.

The CD features a single track that rolls on at the 45.05 mark- and what we have here is a fairly episodic & of course almost constantly sonically derange work-out. We move from amassed & awkward shorted voices/ chanting- that recalls the more primal side of early/ posts Residents stuff. Onto layered & haphazard detuned guitar strum fest, through to dingy organ & keyboard ham-fisted droning, through to denser blends of Dada vocalizing, guitar & keys, down to fleeting moments of lo-fi textural feast. The track certainly twists & turns along its length, and at moments things almost move towards more harmonic/ conventional waters….but these are fairly shortly thrown-out for more sonic retard ness.

I’ve always been a big fan of Mr. Perrot’s wall-noise work- having reviewed many, many Vomir releases over the years. But always found his other projects a little more hit & miss- so I'm glad to say I rather enjoyed much of what this self-titled releases severed up. Sure it hasn’t got the same repeated listening /crude submersion  factor of his Vomir work- but Sabotheur is highly unpredictable, and at times oddly inspired…this of course, like Perrot's other work won’t be for everyone- but if like me you enjoyed Vomir, but have felt a little more uncertain about his other projects I reckon you’ll dig this.
