Pig Destroyer — Terrifyer

Some people felt let down by the latest Dillinger Escape Plan, for those people (and of course people who are into extremity, by which I mean extremity! This ain't no kid's stuff we're talking about here) there's the trio called Pig Destroyer. Guitar, drums and vocals (yep, no bass) are enough to rip your fucken head off!

After a quiet intro the album bursts open and it seems like they're flying. Not lightweight, but like you're in some violent delirium. They are lumped into the grindcore section, I beg to differ. It might have the intensity of grindcore, but underneath that violence are some badass metalriffs. As if they want to stress that fact in track Towering Flesh there actually are (hold tight!): sweeping arpeggio's! I mean, how metal can you get? Don't worry though, there are no signs of whimping out or mellowing down. Terrifyer is as extreme as its predecessor Prowler In The Yard but the band has grown, there's a violent 'swing' to it that's hard to explain. The singer still manages to scare you shitless and if that's not bad enough there's scary samples from films (I think). The danger of extreme records is that they become one-dimensional, Pig Destroyer manages to stay away from that easily by lots of variation in riff- and vocalwise and the use of (sound) effects.

The CD includes a bonus audio-DVD with a 38 minute track called Natasha, presented in a Dolby 5.1-mix as well as a stereo mix. The track is more soundscapish with parts reminiscent of Godflesh and even Sigur Rós. Terrifyer is definitely one of the best extreme (and I mean extreme!) metalreleases this year.
