Paleobiota — Arthropleura

Now here’s a rather originally theme for a walled noise release- Arthropleura’s- giant Millipedes, that lived on the earth between 345 to 295 million years ago. Featured here is a single thirty nine minute wall based around those many-legged Arthropods, and on the whole, it’s a rewarding trip into choppy 'n' juddering wall-craft.

The release comes in the form of a self-released digital download from Paleobiota- a Maryland based project, which seemingly themes all its releases around extinct animals and insects. As far as I can gather the projects has been active since 2019, so far putting out nearing twenty releases- all of which have thus far been digital downloads.

The ‘wall’ comes in at the 39.38 minute mark. It’s built around a relatively firm and set blend of choppy ‘n’ juddering mids, hissing jitters, and some nice sliding ‘n’ slipping static grain subtones. These elements are fed together in a fairly rapid and evenly weaved manner, so as to create a feeling of some fairly long/ large(Arthropleura grew up to 2.5 metres/ eight-foot long) making its way along a jungle floor. If you close your eyes you can almost see the multi feet marvel sliding past you, and at points, you can almost imagine its climb on your face and body- that did give one slight shudder.

The whole thing is well recorded/ capture- with a good balance between the textures. At points, we get some really nicely popping ‘n’ rubbing static blends occurring which have an almost lower case rhythmic feel, but this is never overdone/ or too obvious. On the whole, we have a worthy bit of wall-craft here, and I’ll certainly be checking out more Paleobiota releases.

For a long, long time we’ve only dabbled in reviewing digital downloads on M[m], but as there are more and more worthy wall-noise release like Arthropleura appearing, we’re going to have to give a closer look at the rapidly growing digital-only side of the wall noise scene.
