Nothingdreamer — Dolomedes
Nothingdreamer is a Russian wall noise project that focuses all of its releases around spiders. This three-track album is themed around Dolomedes- a species of spiders that live on water. They detect their prey via ripples, running across the surface to subdue using their foremost legs, which are tipped with small claws; then, they inject venom with their hollow chelicerae to kill and digest the prey.
This is a digital release on Dying Monolith HNW. The cover art takes in a monochrome collage of various pictures of different types of Dolomedes.
First up, we have “Underwater Vibration”. This nearly twelve-and-a-half-minute track is centred around a continual meaty bass churn & purr. Around this, we get a selection of forking & baying mids, shrilling churns, and thinner clutters. All of these create a nicely taut and at times jarring textual study, which really keeps you on your feet, and there is a subtle, uneasy edge to the whole thing.
Next is “Prey Is Flying For Its Life”. In its just over twenty-five-minute run, we find a dense mesh of purring, juddering, and cluttering bass tones. On top of these, we find a more subtle ( compared with the last track) selection of cluttering/ chopping/ jittering subtones. Again, there is a nice alien/ uneasy undercarriage to the proceedings. In its last quarter, we are shifted into a more cluttering/ rolling tension
Finally, it is the twenty-one and a half minutes of “Decomposing Fish”. Here we find a collision of blunt & crude bass burrs, skittering grain ride, thick baying drags, and what sounds like cut-up/ sped up vocals. There is a real roughshod feel to this track, and at points, one imagines a rhino or elephant coming bounding through your living space.
As a release, Dolomedes shows Nothingdreamer as a talented wall-maker, who creates thick & heavy, and fairly distinctive wall-craft.
