Nightmare Castle — Liber AL vel Legis
The release takes it’s name from the Latin name for Aleister Crowley's infamous & regarded occult text The Book of the Law. The colour cdr slip sleeve features a picture of a young Crowley on the front, and on the back there’s a slightly older close–up picture of Crowley raising his hands in blacked pray.
The release features just a single self titled track that comes in at just over the 55 minute mark. After a brief few word sample taking in some of Crowley’s most famous phase, we are set a-drift in the brutal & unforgiving sea of walled noise. The tracks ‘wall’ is built around a great & continuous brutal yet brooding rumble that’s knitted with this slightly higher pitched & more rapid fixed judder ’n’ jittering tone- this second element brings to the table a nice ritual yet graveyard tinged sense of unease. NC ties thses two elements together into a fairly solid & unmoving sate for the track near on hour runtime. From time to time one of the two tones seems to alter or shift slightly, but I’m not sure if this is reality or just the wall playing a trick with your head. Anyway it’s a very satisfying grim ‘n’ brutal wall, and I really like the way the two tones are knitted together in a morbidly moorish & brutal manner.
So “Liber AL vel Legis” is well worth a look if you enjoy set yet atmospheric walled noise that learns more towards the horror & occult side of things. This is my second taster of this projects work, and it really does manage to conjure up it’s own vibe & atmosphere with-in the often fairly fixed sonic constraints of unmoving walled noise.
